Jesus is the better prophet, The better Priest, and the better King.
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,” (Heb. 1:1) God, theos, where our word theology the stud of God comes from. God, who at sundry times or at different times, and diverse manners or different ways spoke in time past. At various points through history, in many different ways God has done the most amazing thing. God has spoken to the Jewish patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, those faithful men who heard the Lord and obeyed. God has spoken to all the fathers, leaders through Jewish history even though many did not obey. How has He spoken? He has spoken to the fathers by the prophets. Those who have been given word from God and spoke thus saith the Lord.
This is not just some prophecy that can be mostly true, these prophets were compelled to speak this word and not falter, because God was the speaker of these words. Jeremiah was a prophet of God who preached to the fathers of the Jewish people, and they did not obey after forty years of preaching, yet because they did not obey does not mean God was not speaking.
God first spoke. “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” (Gen. 1:3)What did He said let there be light and there was light, light shined in the darkness, because God is light, Jesus shined, because Jesus is the light of the world. He used Moses to pen His words. Moses was a prophet of God who spoke to the people of God and led them out of Egypt and gave them the word of God, the commandments of God.
To create God used words, to make man God used words, He used words to command them not to eat, and used words to curse the serpent, Adam, and Eve. “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” (Gen. 3:15) God used words then gave the promise of salvation. Moses wrote and told us that God used words. God spoke through what the prophets have spoken. God has spoken to them through the entirety of the Old Testament, the good, the bad, and the ugly. God desired to use men in order to give his word to His people.
God did not only speak through and reveal truth through the prophets, His prophets.
“Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;” (Heb. 1:2) God spoke to us by the ultimate prophet, He has in these last days spoken through His Son. God now has chosen to speak to us through His Son.
Jesus is the one God has appointed heir of all things.
Everything belongs to Him, to Jesus. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” (Col. 1:16) For by Him was everything created, everything that is in heaven, everything that is in the earth, things seen and unseen. All things were made by Him, For Him, and through Him. “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” (Col. 1:17) He is before everything and holds all things together. Jesus is the very thing that holds us, keeps us together.
“Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;” (Heb. 1:3) Jesus, the Son is the brightness of God’s glory.
Jesus is the express image of His person; He is everything God is wrapped up in human flesh.
“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in the Son.” (Col. 1:19) It please God to have all that He is dwell in the Jesus bodily. “For in him all the fullness of deity lives in bodily form,” (Col. 2:9) For in Him, in Christ dwells all God is in human flesh.
Christ had a threefold office one as Prophet, God spoke in and through His Son, second as Priest, having made purification of sins, by becoming the sacrifice once for all, and an third as King, He sat down at the right hand of the throne of God and is even now interceding for His saints.
“Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” (Heb. 1:4) He is so much better than the angels. Is this an implication that makes Jesus a created being? Absolutely not, Jesus is better than the angels, for He is not an angel but God in the flesh, God incarnate, God the Son, which further proves that all of God’s fulness dwelt in Christ bodily.
“Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:” (Heb. 10:5) When He, the Son came into the world, He said and declared that God did not desire sacrifice and offering, but God granted Him, the Son a body with which to die as that final, complete sacrifice. This verse is referring to Psalm 40:6, but the writer of Hebrews attributes it to the Messiah Jesus Christ. He who made the angel did for a time humbled Himself lower than the angel and was born as a man, though still fully God, which by no means minimized His position and power, but was set aside to accomplish salvation for those who would believe.
“For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?” (Hebrews 1:5) The writer of Hebrews asks a question, that the Psalmist asks and again he will apply the answer to Christ Jesus. Which of the angels, the created beings were ever told by God that they were His Son? None. Which of them were ever told by God that that He was their father? Again, the answer is none. “And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.” (Heb. 1:6) Again the writer of Hebrews tells us that when God brings forth, which is a present tense verb for was showing a fulfillment of this culminating in the Christ that has now come. When God would bring His first begotten, His only generation, the one who was everything He was who was clothed in humanity, the principal source of all things, the one who made all things, formed all things, and will hold all things, who is to be worshiped by all in heaven and on earth, whether man, beast, or angel.
“And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. (Heb. 1:7-8) The angels were told that they would be ministering spirit, that would mister flames of fire, but the son was told much, much more for He was better by far than the angels for He is the originator of the angels. The Son is told that His throne, He place from which He rules is forever and ever, but did you notice what the LORD called the Son, He called Him God. God acknowledges the Son is forever enthroned and the scepter of His righteousness, His uprightness, is the scepter of His kingdom. Uprightness would be how the kingdom of God will be ruled by the Son. The author is applying to Jesus “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.” (Psalm 45:6)
“Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.” (Heb 1:9) This Son proclaimed in the Old Testament is the fulfilled Son in the New Testament. The Son has loved righteousness and hated wickedness. He has loved what is right and hated what is wrong, hated sin and therefore God, who is His God has anointed Him with the oil of gladness. Jesus did not attain this righteousness, it is what He was, what He is, and what He will always be. This one who was for a time made a little lower than the angels will be anointed above His fellows, for He is and has always been above His created angels, that He Himself had created.
“And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:” (Heb. 1:10) The Lord again says of the Son, that He Himself had in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth. The Lord also says of His Son that He Himself had fashioned the works of the heavens with His own hands. Jesus is the craftsman of God, the principle creator of all things, He is the source of all that exists, He is the creative hand of God.
“They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.” (Heb. 1:11-12) All that He made, the Lord says will perish, but Jesus will always remain. The things that He has made will wear and get old like a garment, for He, Himself will fold up the heavens and the foundations of the earth, the earth will be changed as will the heavens but He is the same and His years, His forverness will never fail nor falter.
“But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?” (Heb. 1:13) Which angel did God tell at any point that He is able to sit on God’s right hand until enemies would be humbled at His feet in utter submission to Him?
No angel was given that right, but the Son who is of the Father, who is all God is in human flesh, fully man to receive the just penalty for the sin of those who would believe, yet fully God that would make permanent atonement for those He redeemed.
“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” (Heb. 1:14) If it were not clear before it should be clear now, in the form of a question. Aren’t angels ministering spirits, who never received worship of God, but always rejected worship, but were sent forth to minister to man who would be the heirs and inheritors of salvation?
One addendum must be added here, where we talk about angels, there was in the Old Testament the Angel of the Lord, who always spoke with God’s authority, this is what we call the preincarnate Christ, Christ Jesus before He put on human flesh, not to be confused with angels. Angels are created beings and cannot, must not receive worship, is this not why Satan fell from glory as angel of God? Yet Christ is to be worshiped for He is God incarnate.
